Mammogram=Playdough

  1. For those of you who have never had a mammogram-including me until now-it is an experimentation in the art of playdough. Who knew that human tissue could be manipulated in the following ways: bent, molded, smashed, lifted, separated, squeezed and just about turned inside out. They also give you these fabulous little stickers that mark the spot, unlike the stickers my children get after their doctor appointment. Well I went for the mammogram and then they sent me next door to the ultra sound. The attendant was very quiet, just making little noises in the back of her throat, but she didn't say anything. It was warm and dark in the room, almost like a day at the spa. Then she left and said she would return shortly. She returned with Dr. Pak aho said there was something there and I would need to return for a biopsy. She said it could be cancer but I wouldn't die from it. That is when the tears started rolling but I kept trying to hold it together. Why would I hold it together? This is the time you should let loose without any shame, but I kept trying to make them feel better. I pulled myself together and they decided I should go back to mammography for a few more images with Sheila. When I turned the corner there was nice, quiet Shelia offering me a hug. That is when I really knew I was in for it-they don't hug you if it's nothing. I wanted to tell her not to be kind to me-if she could just be cold and callous I could get through this ordeal, but no. Sheila had to show compassion and kindness which melted me all the more.
